Lancashire County Council can help you find honest and trustworthy traders in Lancashire. We have developed a Safe Trader Scheme which is managed by our Trading Standards Service.
The aim of the scheme is to help you find a reliable trader. All members or traders of the scheme have shown they are committed to treating their customers honestly and fairly by committing to a code of practice.
Help Direct can also offer more help and advice on staying safe in your own home, including arranging fire safety checks and practical advice on taking steps to making your home safer and easier to manage.
Here is a list of the Membership Criteria Each Business has to Adhere to to Join...
To join the Scheme businesses are asked to:
· Demonstrate their commitment to fair and honest trade by agreeing to abide
by a Code of Practice.
· Provide 3 references from previous customers (owners/occupiers not in
· Have a minimum of £2 million public liability
insurance and employers liability insurance
Members of the scheme may use the scheme hallmark in their publicity, on their
business paperwork or on their vehicles.
As part of our application process checks will be made on the applicant's previous
history in relation to (but not limited to) the following:
· Membership of any claimed trade associations or professional bodies
· Trading Standards Services' own enquiry databases
· Consumer Credit License (where applicable)
Criminal Record Checks
Some members decide to offer consumers extra reassurance by carrying out criminal
record checks on their own staff.
To make reference to criminal records checks on the website entry, businesses must
provide some evidence that checks are being carried out and that they have systems
in place to ensure that they are regularly renewed. Please check the comments box
on the trader's website entry for details of what checks have been carried out.
You should also verify with the individual business whether they use subcontractors
who also check their staff.

The performance of members of the scheme is monitored by Lancashire County
Council Trading Standards via customer feedback. Traders are encouraged to seek
customer feedback which is scrutinised by the Safe Trader team before it appears on
the website. Customers rate the performance of traders by awarding stars for
Customer Service, Quality of Work and Time Taken.
